On April 7th Public Works and RRR present The Works with Big Freedia and special guests. We promise a night of Freedia’s signature bounce irreverence, dirty funk, sexual ambiguity and good old, sweaty fun. Freedia is the “Queen Diva” of bounce in NOLA and performs six or more times weekly all over the city. Her variant of the feel-good party sound is strictly for the “Sissies” (the local monicker for biological males who don’t necessarily identify themselves as men). The music contains gay and transvestite themes and isn’t afraid to be upfront about them.
Freedia is no stranger to success either, and has tasted commercial acceptance for her singles “Gin in My System” and “Azz Everywhere!” and her albums “An Ha, Oh Yeah” (1999) and “Queen Diva” (2003) albums. But her raunchy music and shows have their roots in her time as a sophomore at the Walter L. Cohen High School in New Orleans where she was choir director. So Prince is not the only one to merge the sacred with the carnal, though he may not have as much bass behind him (or ass in front of him) as Freedia does.
As well as performing as a solo artist, Freedia, who also runs a successful decorating company, has collaborated with Spank Rock, Ninjasonik, Japanther and Monique among others and has played live with Galactic, and alongside the likes of Kid Sister, De La Soul, Quintron and Miss Pussycat.
Also on the bill are DJ Rusty Lazer, Richie Panic, Vin Sol, Chris Orr, Black Mountie, and Jaysonik. So step through on the 7th and bounce with us.
